Mash-up, WORM

Duo exhibition and performance

WORM, Rotterdam

Performance, looped video projection, screen printed glass, deep fat fryer, oil, potatoes

Mash-up involves an actress in the setting of a video installation. She rhythmically makes her way through a monologue premised on street rap-battles, a type of rapping that often includes brash bragging and comical insults. The figure battles with herself and an anonymous audience. The potato is used as a repetitive motif within the installation. Clusters of potatoes are screen-printed on stained glass panels and the vegetable is used as a prop to be peeled, quartered and diced. Throughout the performance the potatoes are cooked in a deep-fat fryer with the violent sound amplified through a speaker. The potatoes are cooked in fat for the duration of the performance and later served to the audience.
