Blood Sisters is a video work that takes student fraternities in the city of Groningen as a starting point. The artists were particularly drawn to traditional hazing rituals, which served as a loose framework for staging a fictional initiation ceremony involving four older women.
Hazing often entails forcing new members to perform humiliating acts, a practice typically used to reinforce group cohesion and identity. Blood Sisters playfully explores these dynamics, investigating how humiliation and hierarchy operate, and how fear and shame are weaponised in public spaces to manipulate behaviour and enforce control.
